Sony’s latest lens technology delivers extraordinary resolution and bokeh in a compact, lightweight lens. Extraordinary AF, smooth operability, and rugged reliability add the finishing touches to this innovative large-aperture standard prime lens.
Two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements effectively correct distortion and most types of aberration. This new optical design also employs an ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element to suppress chromatic aberration. And with our original Nano AR Coating II on lens surfaces, internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting are dramatically reduced
Innovative optics and an F1.4 maximum aperture combine to deliver magnificent bokeh. Smooth, naturally defocused background and foreground bokeh at F1.4 are ideal for making portrait subjects stand out from their surroundings. Advanced features that contribute to superb bokeh quality include XA (extreme aspherical) elements that effectively prevent onion-ring bokeh, and carefully controlled spherical aberration during design and manufacture.

XA (extreme aspherical) elements precisely positioned in an innovative design, high-thrust XD linear motors, and the latest compact circular aperture unit work together in a large-aperture high-resolution lens hat is only 3.17” (80.6 mm) in outer diameter and 3.78” (96.0 mm) in length while weighing just 18.23 oz (516 grams). A unique blend of mobility and low-light performance make it an ideal choice for everything from portraits to snapshots.
The lens’s focus group is driven by our high-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and an advanced control algorithm for smooth, responsive focus drive. Noise and vibration are minimized for refined, quiet AF operation that can be a huge advantage when shooting movies. Movie subjects are smoothly captured and tracked even when shooting at 120 fps or other high frame rates.
Linear Response MF provides manual focusing response that rivals mechanical lenses, and is more than responsive enough to produce smooth rack focus for movies. An iris lock switch can be locked so that the aperture ring can be fixed at the “A” position to prevent unwanted changes, or manually set from F1.4 to F16. Two customizable focus. hold buttons and an AF/MF focus mode switch provide extra shooting versatility.
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants that do become attached to the lens surface. A dust and moisture resistant design3 provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions.
Sony lenses have become increasingly popular among videographers due to their advanced features and exceptional performance. One of the most significant advantages of Sony's lenses is their smooth and accurate autofocus systems, which allow videographers to capture footage with ease and without worrying about the lens constantly hunting for focus. The lenses also come with built-in image stabilization systems that help to minimize camera shake and ensure smooth, steady footage, which is crucial when shooting handheld or in situations where a tripod is not possible.

Two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively correct distortion and most types of aberration so that high resolution is achieved right out to the image edges. This new optical design also employs an ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element to suppress chromatic aberration so that images are clear and sharp without color bleeding

Sony's most advanced optical technology provides superb resolution in a compact, lightweight lens. Minimum focusing distance is 16.1" (41 cm) and maximum magnification is 0.16x when AF is used and 15" (38 cm and 0.18x) for MF, providing extra flexibility for shooting stills and movies. XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements maintain sharpness at any focusing distance, while smooth, deep bokeh at F1.4 separates the subject from the background.
This high-performance lens effectively maximizes the speed potential of a series cameras, quickly acquiring focus on subjects even when using shallow depth of field. Sony's high-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and an advanced control algorithm ensure smooth, responsive focus drive for stills and movies.
Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation immediately produces a corresponding change in focus, similar to the response of a mechanical focus system. Precise, intuitive control directly translates your creative ideas to impressive imagery.
XD linear motors and an advanced control algorithm optimize response to control signals so that focusing is precise and vibration is minimized for refined, quiet AF operation that can be a huge advantage when shooting movies, even at high frame rates. The breathing compensation function in compatible c series cameras is also supported.
An aperture ring with a click ON/OFF switch offers direct, hands-on aperture control. An iris lock switch can be locked so that the aperture ring is either fixed at the “A” position, or can be manually set from F1.4 to F16. When unlocked the aperture ring can be seamlessly moved between all settings.
A dust and moisture resistant design provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions.
Focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch provide extra shooting versatility. Customizable focus hold buttons in two locations can be assigned other functions from the camera's menus to match shooting needs. For example, the Focus Magnifier function could be assigned to these buttons so that it is available for quick focus checks while shooting.
This lens accepts standard 67 mm screw-on filters. Thanks to its internal focus system the front element does not rotate while focusing, facilitating the use of circular polarizing filters for landscape photography or variable ND filters for movies. The FE 24mm F1.4 GM and FE 35mm F1.4 GM lenses are also threaded for 67 mm filters, so filters can be shared.
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants that do become attached to the lens surface.
